Parts of a Google web page

The Google search engine uses what is called a one-box search. You just type in what you are looking for and Google will try to guess what is best to show you. For most searches there are 2 different kinds of results. There are the organic results and the paid results. The paid results are marked as sponsored. People pay to have their sites listed here by using an auction system and they are listed by how much they bid for particular terms and how relevant Google thinks their site is for that term. Some times Google will put paid results at the top of the page with a different background color. Recently they changed it to yellow. Google determines the organic results. They have a complicated algorithm that involves hundreds of factors. Many people refer to them as SERP (search engine result page). There are certain instances where they return special results right above the organic results.

Examples:

Stock Information if you type in a stock symbol.
Maps if you type in an address
Yellow pages type information if you type in local information
News or Press releases
Definition if you type in something with define in front of it
Products if you type something that is listed for sale on Google Products (formally froogle)
And many more.
